Program Possibility: Guitar Hero Program

Submitted by Ashley Rose Consalvi, 2nd Year Resident Assistant, Gwynedd-Mercy College

I live in a residence hall with predominantly upperclassmen residents. Sometimes it is very difficult to get upperclassmen to participate in your programs, so I tend to ask my residents what activities they would like to have.

One of my residents suggested playing "Guitar Hero". From this suggestion, I took the idea and expanded on it. I decided to make it a "Guitar Hero" tournament, having the residents compete on three different tournament brackets based on the game's levels of easy, hard, and expert.

I used a projector to project the video game off of a cement wall in our main lounge. I also offered gift cards to the winners of each bracket. In addition to offering prizes, I also made brownies and rice krispy treats and bought several bottles of soda.

Overall, the program was a great success. I believe the program was well received because I offered residents a chance to compete with their peers at a new, popular video game, there was an incentive to participate, and there was food!
