“About the Trainer” Information

Module 1:

Title: Establishing Community: First Steps
Trainer: Mary-Beth Cooper, Ph.D., Vice President of Student Affairs, Rochester Institute of Technology

About the Trainer: Mary-Beth has presented regionally and nationally over 40 times, and she has been the recipient of the “Best Of Programming Award” in the NEACUHO region. Mary-Beth is an adjunct faculty member at Canisius College and the Warner School of Education at the University of Rochester. She has consulted in both higher education and secondary education settings, and will serve as “Consultant in Residence” at the MACUHO 2001 Conference. Mary-Beth has her Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Michigan State University.

Module 2:

Title: Establishing Community with Older Residents
Trainer: Carolyn "Waz" Miller, Director of Residence Life/Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Experiences, East Carolina University

About the Trainer: Carolyn "Waz" Miller is the Director of Residence Life/Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Experiences at East Carolina University. She has been at ECU for 8 years. Prior to working at ECU, Waz was the Assistant Director of Housing at Western Illinois University for five years. She also worked at Loyola University-New Orleans and the University of San Francisco. Waz obtained her MA in Human Resources Management at Northeast Missouri State University and her BS in Elementary Education at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. She is active in ACUHO-I, and served as the Program Chair for the 2000 Conference and is also a member of ACPA and recently completed a four-year term on Commission III.

Module 3:

Title: Managing Confrontation
Trainer: Carol Boucher, Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Director of Residence Life, Quinnipiac University

About the Trainer: Carol has presented dozens of times regionally and nationally. She has consulted at both educational and for-profit organizations on topics related to behavior management and conflict resolution. She has been an adjunct faculty member at St. Joseph’s College in West Hartford, CT, where for many years, she taught graduate courses on conflict resolution and values clarification. Carol is also the author of the book, Management of Conflict, written as a text for one of her classes.

Module 4:

Title: Roommate Conflict! What Now?
Trainer: Lynn Riker, Director of Residence Life, New Jersey Institute of Technology

About the Trainer: Lynn Riker has been involved in staff training around conflict resolution for 15 years. Throughout her professional career she has presented at student conferences (GLACURH and NACURH), professional conferences (GLACUHO, MACUHO, RELI and ACUHO-I) and staff training (Central Michigan, Seton Hall and New Jersey Institute of Technology).

Module 5 & 6:

Title: Programming Modules: Creativity & Effective Publicity
Trainer: Kim Moistner-Bartlett, Partner, Reslife.Net, Ltd.

About the Trainer: Kim Moistner-Bartlett is a Partner with Reslife.Net. Prior, she served as the Director of the Freshman Year Experience, a program she created and developed for The University of Southern Mississippi. She has eight years of professional experience within housing and residence life having served as Resident Director, Area Coordinator and Assistant Director of Residence Life at institutions including The University of Wisconsin-Stout, Philadelphia University, Temple University and Southern Miss. Kim received her M.A. in Student Personnel Administration in Higher Education from Ball State University and a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Module 7:

Title: Eating Disorders
Trainer: Lisa Macke, Counselor, Tennessee Technological University

About the Trainer: Lisa Macke is a counselor at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, TN. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1993 from Indiana University and her Master of Science degree in Counseling Psychology in 1995 from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS. Lisa is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. At TTU, Lisa provides counseling to students, faculty, and staff, presents educational, interactive, and *fun* workshops to groups all over campus, serves as outreach coordinator for the Counseling Center, and serves as the TTU coordinator of Eating Disorders Awareness Week each year.

Module 8:

Title: HATE is a Four-Letter Word: Educating our Staff and Students
Trainer: Joanne Goldwater, Assistant Dean for Residential Life, St. Mary’s College of Maryland

About the Trainer: Joanne Goldwater is a cofounder of the Regional Entry Level Institute (RELI) for entry-level professional staff. She has completed keynote addresses at the MACUHO R.D. Conference, NEACUHO New Professional Conference, and Delaware Valley Student Affairs Conference, and was a featured speaker at the Maryland Student Affairs Conference. Throughout her career she has completed dozens of presentations at national and regional conferences on a wide variety of topical areas.

Module 9:

Title: Motivation: Finishing Strong
Trainer: Deb Coffin, Assistant Director of Housing, University of Colorado, Boulder

About the Trainer: Deb Coffin has presented over 100 training programs at the national, regional and local level on a wide variety of topical areas. She has won 3 best of programming awards within the AIMHO Region, and for the last 10 years her programs have been selected as part of the “Best 5” in AIMHO. Deb has provided comprehensive training development programs for all levels of staff in higher education, and for the last 5 years has served as a consultant to private corporations and higher education agencies.

Module 10:

Title: Ethical Decision Making for Resident Assistants
Trainer: Dave McKelfresh, Director of Staff Training and Assessment, Colorado State University

About the Trainer: Dave McKelfresh is currently the Director of Staff Training and Assessment for Housing and Dining Services at Colorado State University. Dave is a faculty member in the Student Affairs in Higher Education graduate program and teaches a class on “Ethical Issues in the Profession.” In addition to writing on the topic of ethics, Dave has presented on the topic of ethics regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Module 11:

Title: “Where There’s Smoke, There’s Fire.” The Importance of Fire Safety for Resident Assistants
Trainer: Craig Allen, Director of Residential Services, Texas Christian University

About the Trainer: Craig received his MA in Higher Education/Student Personnel at the University of Arizona and his BS in Marketing at the State University of New York at Oswego. As an undergraduate he enjoyed two years as a resident assistant. Craig worked at Seton Hall University from 1995 – 2005, serving as Director of Housing and Residence Life there from June 1998 to August 2005. In January 2000 Seton Hall University experienced a tragic fire that claimed the lives of three freshmen students and injured over 50 others. Craig has since done extensive writing, presenting and training on the topic of fire safety. He has written articles for NASPA Netresults, the MACUHO Newsletter and ResLife.Net on crisis management/fire safety. Craig made presentations at annual conferences such as MACUHO, ACPA and ACUHO-I, and he has served as a guest speaker at several institutions on the topic of crisis management and fire safety. Craig resides in Keller, Texas with his wife Shannon and three children. He enjoys golf, TCU football and travel.

Module 12:

Title: Managing Your First Floor Meeting
Trainer: Cathy Bickel, Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life, Ball State University

About the Trainer: Cathy Bickel is currently the Associate Director of Housing and Residence Life and serves on the graduate faculty for the Student Affairs Administration and Higher Education program at Ball State University. She earned her bachelor’s and master's degree from Ball State and worked in various student activities and housing positions at Saint Mary-of-the Woods College and Marian College before returning to her alma mater in 1998. Cathy earned her doctorate in higher education and student affairs administration from Indiana University- Bloomington in 2001.

Module 13:

Title: Careers in Housing and Student Affairs
Trainer: Merrily S. Dunn, Ph.D., Assistant Professor and M. Ed Program Coordinator, University of Georgia

About the Trainer: Merrily Dunn currently works as an assistant professor and M.Ed. program coordinator in the College Student Affairs Administration program at the University of Georgia. Dr. Dunn, originally from Nebraska, holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, an M.S. in Professional Studies in Education from Iowa State University and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Ohio State University. Her professional experience in student affairs includes work as a hall director at Marquette University and a variety of positions at Ohio State in women’s services, judicial affairs and residence life. She also spent the eight years as a faculty member and program coordinator in the Student Affairs in Higher Education program at Mississippi State University.

Module 14:

Title: The Spiritual Development of College Students
Trainer: James Puglisi

About the Trainer: James Puglisi has worked in the field of education for the past 14 years. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Ministry at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, IL focusing upon theology in cross-cultural settings. He also possesses a Master of Arts in Higher Education from Geneva College and a Master of Arts in Applied Theology from Wheeling Jesuit University. During his career in Higher Education he has served in a variety of positions including residence life, residential ministry, student activities, and campus ministry. A fan of movies, he has utilized contemporary films to develop programs around topics such as formation of conscious; spirituality; gender identity; white privilege and anti-racism. An avid rugby player, he has also assisted in the formation and coaching of several collegiate rugby clubs.

Module 15:

Title: The Customer Service Connection

Title: Bringing Closure to Your Floor/Wing Community
Trainer: Timothy Johnson, Director of Housing and Residence Life, Rutgers University Newark

About the Trainer: Tim Johnson has worked in residence life for over 16 years. He is a skilled presenter who has trained thousands of staff in non-violent confrontation techniques. Additionally, Tim has served as a Keynote Speaker for the NEACUHO New Professionals Conference, has been the recipient of the MACUHO Region’s Best Program Award and has twice been a faculty member for the Regional Entry Level Institute (RELI).
